The Ball Flute
A polished steel musical Ball designed as a reimagination of a concert flute. The flute is pitched in C and can play a range of four notes, A, B, C, D.
Each pitch is created by allowing a specific amount of air to escape the Ball.
In order to achieve each successive note, keep the position of your fingers on the previous holes.
This will take practice to learn how to properly play. So you might not get it on your first try. And if you do, that's awesome! But if you don't, practice, practice, practice. And then practice some more.
Behind the Project
Making The Ball Flute
Can an industrial object make music? Ball bearings reduce friction and allow smooth rotation between moving parts in machinery.
By drilling specific holes, we can produce musical notes from a ball bearing, turning it into a unique musical instrument. Below is a graphic sent along with the ball harp, illustrating the note mapping and instructions for using the instrument.
